       SSG PHILLIP D. BLACKMON ENLISTED IN THE ARMY JUNE 6, 2002 AS AN EXPLOSIVE ORDNANCE DISPOSAL SPECIALIST AND WAS ASSIGNED TO THE 760TH ORDNANCE DISPOSAL COMPANY (EOD), FT. DIX NEW JERSEY WHERE HE DEPLOYED TO IRAQ FOR A 7 MONTH TOUR CONDUCTING MISSIONS TO DISARM THE ROADSIDE IED’S THAT WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR TAKING SO MANY LIVES AS WELL AS CONDUCTING LARGE-SCALE DEMOLITION OPERATIONS.

     AFTER RETURNING FROM OVERSEAS, HE SUPPORTED THE UNITED STATES SECRET SERVICE PROVIDING PROTECTION FOR PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH DURING HIS CAMPAIGN FOR REELECTION, AND OTHER FOREIGN DIGNITARIES.  

   AFTERWARDS, HE TRANSFERRED TO THE 706TH ORDNANCE COMPANY (EOD) AT SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, HAWAII WHERE HE DEPLOYED FOR A SECOND TOUR TO IRAQ AS A TEAM LEADER WHERE HE WAS INJURED WHILE CONDUCTING ROUTE CLEARANCE MISSIONS IN MOSUL, IRAQ.  ALSO, WHILE ASSIGNED TO 760TH EOD, HE HAD THE PRIVILEGED TO CONDUCT MISSIONS FOR THE JOINT POW-MIA ACCOUNTABILITY COMMAND (JPAC) IN VIETNAM SEARCHING FOR THE REMAINS OF THE FALLEN WHO NEVER MADE IT HOME.

   IN 2006, WHILE CONDUCTING A ROUTE CLEARANCE MISSION IN THE STREETS OF MOSUL, IRAQ, AN IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICE DETONATED THREE FEET OUTSIDE HIS VEHICLE DOOR.  THE RESULT OF THIS INCIDENT LEFT SSG BLACKMON UNCONSCIOUS, TOOK THE HEARING IN HIS RIGHT EAR, CAUSED A MILD TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY, AND SEVERAL MUSCULATURE INJURIES.                SSG BLACKMON CURRENTLY HAS HAD MULTIPLE OPERATIONS ON BOTH SHOULDERS, MULTIPLE OPERATIONS ON HIS BACK TO REPAIR FRACTURED VERTEBRAE IN HIS BACK AND NECK.                 SSG BLACKMON WAS INVOLVED, AT AN EXTREME CLOSE RANGE, WITH SEVERAL IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICE DETONATIONS THAT HE CONTINUES TO LIVE WITH THE RESIDUE TO THIS DAY.
